Snake in the Grass

I couldn’t let it last.

I stumbled across a serpent in the grass

We stared at each other in a perpetual trance

Uneasy not knowing what it’ll do next

Its intentions seemed far too perplexed

After a while I thought we’d be friends

But I always gracefully kept my distance

Wasn’t sure that when I talked it listened

In the setting sun its scales glistened

Tongue smelling an opportunity

Its prey is coming and it’s too weak

A rabbit trying to hop to its own beat

Sees the serpent but its mind is on greener greens

I watch as the serpent coils its neck

It lets me get closer to the rabbit, but it doesn’t suspect

I’ll cause harm to this problem

It aims for its head but I step on the serpent

I step on it dead

No remorse in the moment

Not an ounce of dread

Blood drains from the serpent ever so red

I couldn’t let it hurt it

Not again

So I guess there was a reason I was cautious in the end
