Surrendering to the Pain of Guilt and Shame
To give up and to let go can be some of the hardest things to do in life when people are so used to being in control and shouldering responsibilities. Sometimes people are forced to let go, and other times, they give up on their own accord. Sometimes guilt and shame are the reasons to let go and other times, they are the results. In Franz Kafka's novella, The Metamorphosis, characterization, through the depiction of Gregor and his family's transformation; and symbolism, such as, the hospital and the open window in his room are used to explain the guilt and the shame that Gregor felt toward his family, which led to his surrender in the end.

How to Ruin a Movie That Is Based on a Book
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series, The Giver, Eragon, Twilight, those and much more have done a remarkable job at becoming the worst movies to be based on the best books of all time. It is so impressive that the directors of these horrible movies deserve a round of applause for the amount of crap they can produce and put a familiar name on just to get money. For a Hollywood creation to become the worst movie of all time is a really tough standard to live up to, especially in this day and age with all this technology and talent budding everywhere. I once had the thought that it would be impossible for Hollywood to make any more terrible movies that were to be based on books, but I thought wrong. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children had utterly destroyed my expectations, and made me think again. In order to make a movie as hell-bound as that one, these three steps must be followed: make sure that the actors do not portray the characters correctly, change most of the main ideas of the story, and do not forget that the finished product should not make any sense whatsoever.

How to Prepare Children for Life
There are three types of people in this world: those who fear to fall the most, those who fear to hit the ground the most, and those who fear never being able to get back up again, the most. According to neuroscience, the brain has the ability to modify its connections, and change throughout human life, which is called Neuroplasticity. It is believed that older people have less of the brain plasticity that is required to learn new things than younger people. However, a strong brain does not equal a strong mind, and a strong mind is what's necessary for a child in this day and age. That being said, the children today can learn to become more and more resilient, and prepared for life and its tragedies depending upon what influences them the most, the support they both give and receive, and their willingness to overcome.

Ten Days to Suffer
According to Buddha, "Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional." It is possible to experience pain without having to suffer from it, but in order for that to happen, one has to let nature to take its course. One has to have the strength to let go of the things that worry them, and just be still for a moment to allow things to fall in place. In my case, I wasn't strong enough, but I did learn from those experiences, and took that lesson to heart. It was in early January of 2016 that I suffered from Mononucleosis, during that time, I also pretended that I was okay just so that I would be released early from the hospital, even when I felt terribly sick, but in the end, I had learned to accept things for the way they were.

Beneath the Surface of Their Skin
The only race that people are allowed to make fun of is their own. That's one of the unwritten rules that has been established within recent years. The only exception to that rule was when it happens amongst friends and if they are okay with it. However, stereotypes are a completely different matter. Stereotypes are not something that should be used for humor, especially when the costs of stereotyping far exceed the rewards, if there are any at all. The reason why I don't agree that stereotypes bring people together is that they set high standards and expectations, they tend to apply to only a few percents of an entire race's population, and they are often used as a shortcut when it comes to figuring out what other people are like.

Beware of Dogs
Whether they are playful pets or fierce warriors, dogs have never left man's side. Since the beginning of civilization, dogs have always been trustworthy and loyal companions of mankind. With their kind, gentle spirits and great strengths, they have been a great help to people of all nations and tongues. They deserve to be well-taken care of, because of how much they take care of humankind. Dogs are very impressive creatures that, in spite of the responsibilities of taking care of them, one cannot overlook the fun adventures and the new perspective of life that comes along with them.

The Beauty in 'Trash'
Set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Trash shines a light on the issue of corruption within the political realm, and the citizens' own police force through the eyes of three boys who take it upon themselves to finish what one man started and overcome it all. Mark Kermode called this film “a cross between Slumdog Millionaire and City of God.” I believe that this film is a window film, because within this film lies the “ability to speak truth to reality” as Andre Bazin, a film theorist, stated. I enjoy watching window films such as this one, because they don’t really end. Even as we walk out the theatre or turn off our TVs, the story continues in our minds and in our lives, and it’s up to each of us to decide how we want to end that story.

Money and Happiness
To the majority of the world, money is seen as an objective, something that they will give almost everything they have in order to obtain. Most do so with the belief that having a lot of money will supposedly make their lives happier. However, if we look at money as a means to an end, instead of the other way around, we have to wonder, just how happy will the way we spend our hard-earned money make us? The authors of Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending, Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton, figure out the answer to that question, and compile five ways that we can spend money in order to make ourselves happier and our lives more satisfactory. These past two weeks, I analyzed my spending, and thought about how four of the five pieces of advice: buying experiences, making it a treat, investing in others, and buying time could make me a much happier person; and in the end, I realized that applying these rules to my lifestyle will not only create a happier effect on my life itself, but will also make me more responsible with my money overall.
