"They"

Queer Poem

Dear cis people:

What's that you say?

You're not comfortable using they/them pronouns

For other people?

Oh, I'm sorry—

I think you're making the mistake of thinking

That everything little thing in life

Is about you.

You can make the argument that "they" is not singular,

And you can argue that "they" is an improper use of grammar

But guess what?

Your comfort has nothing to do with it;

It's about THEIR comfort,

Not yours.

It's about how THEY want to be labeled,

Not you.

It's about how THEY feel,

Not you.

It's about how THEY identify,

Not you.

It's about who THEY are,

Not you.

It's about THEM,

Not.

You.

You know what IS about you?

The decision to either be respectful,

Or to be an inconsiderate asshole.

You don't have to understand someone,

Relate to someone,

To give them the respect that they deserve.

Dear cis people:

What’s that you say?

You’re not comfortable with me

Telling you all about your privilege

And telling you how to treat other people without that same privilege?

Let me sum it up for you:

Be mindful,

And don't be assholes.
