The Stars Tonight

This poem was written in 2002 and is about someone I met while going to Grand Rapids Community College. We were both involved in on again off again relationships and found comfort in each others company.

All the stars are out tonight.

If you look closely you can see them.

Cool country air and no street lights in sight.

You live on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

I passed two lakes to get here.

Trees line each road and there is no shoulder.

There is no warning of animals that might jump out and crash into your car.

Deer crossing signs make no sense.

Deer never look both ways before proceeding.

I am out of my element.

I am a city girl in the country tonight.

Each moment creates a memory.

There is no place I would rather be,

Than right here with you.

Lost in a moment.

The dark sky is above us.

I can feel my heart starting to love you.

You make me happy.

You make my heart smile.

I can’t have you until she is out of the picture.

Your heart belongs to her.

I can’t change your mind.

I can’t make your heart feel something it won’t.

I can’t use my body.

I can’t use my soul.

Love runs deep through these veins.

I thought you could end my miseries.

I thought you were the missing piece to the puzzle.

I feel like I have known you my entire life.

It doesn’t seem like only a few short months.

The way you appear everywhere feels like fate.

I can’t ride an elevator or stand in line for Subway without you being there.

None of this was ever planned.

We both are in the same situation.

We both have on again off again relationships that never seem to work out.

We both try to hard to make the wrong things right.

Your eyes sucked me in.

I stared too long and became lost.

The stars are out tonight and we are both in the same place at the same time on the same wavelength.

The dark sky is above us,

And my eyes are fixed on you.

Smoking clove cigarettes, drinking cheap beer and watching the lightning bugs.
