Google Translate With Shakespeare

To Translate Or Not To Translate

William Shakespeare is one of the very few writers in the world that has remained relevant even centuries after his death. His famous work has been adapted many times and his use of words have been constantly dissected by generations of pupils and teachers. He is considered one of the great writers of all time. Of course, nowadays this can be easily disputed as everybody has their own opinion. Despite this, his work is still referenced and adapted even to this day. So, a random thought came to me after watching some Google Translate sing music videos: what if Shakespeare's work went through the ever-so-famous Google Translate treatment?

I'll start with the prologue to one of his most famous and adapted works: the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet.

Prologue: Romeo & Juliet

Original:

Google Translate Version:

The first thing that's obvious is that the rhythm formed in the sonnet has been washed away along with the rhyming couplets. The new opening imagined by Google Translate has changed the entire set for the play. We no longer have two households: we have two rooms in the Verona exhibition if such a thing exists. It sounds like Google Translate is looking forward to Comic Con.

The opening highlights most of the important things in the play. Such as the war between the Capulets and the Montagues, the suicide of the title characters, and the death of Mercutio. In the original, you can see everything connects together and tells a story. The Google Translate leaves hardly any traces of its original roots. However, it does keep the unpleasant tone from its original material.

The next translation is the opening of Act 4, Scene 1 of Macbeth with all the witches and the famous "double, double, toil and trouble" line.

I've got no words for this one. I ended up making another one just for an extra bonus.

Both different translations highlight how it is possible that things can get lost in translation. In the second translation, Macbeth now has a double toilet whilst the first has toxic bees and snake filters. And wolves have feathers, apparently. Either way, neither translation makes a lot of sense now, and all the carefully crafted style of Shakespeare has now been destroyed. The whole scene has changed, including the atmosphere.

Next, I will translate a popular passage from Hamlet. Which includes the famous "to be, or not to be" phrase.

To be, or not to be: that is the question:Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to sufferThe slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,And by opposing end them? Fairy in your dinosaurs was a line that amused me. Do the fairies live in the dinosaurs or did the dinosaurs actually eat the fairies? Fairies I can see in Shakespeare's world, but thanks to Google Translate, it now includes dinosaurs. There are no fortunes in the outrageous arrows: only anger remains. Now it's set in Paris. It does, however, keep the constant use of the words death and sleep.

Next is a passage from the first act of Midsummer Night's Dream. This is a part of Quince's dialogue.

Some of your French crowns have no hair at all, andthen you will play bare-faced. But, masters, hereare your parts: and I am to entreat you, requestyou and desire you, to con them by to-morrow night;and meet me in the palace wood, a mile without thetown, by moonlight; there will we rehearse, for ifwe meet in the city, we shall be dogged withcompany, and our devices known. In the meantime Iwill draw a bill of properties, such as our playwants. I pray you, fail me not.

Google Translate version:

Some French crowns have no hair,

Think about it. I am not praying. I will not fail.

It's amazing how most of this text became simplified and almost unchanged. The characters are now selling moonlight and have apparently adopted the city. It's nonsense phrases like this that can give me endless possibilities and some cheap entertainment. As both a writer and reader, I find Google Translate a fascinating and useful device. It's great for short and simple sentences, but everything else, things are bound to get lost in translation and the message becomes lost like the grains in the sand slipping towards the waves of the sea.

Before we end this article, I would like do a few more translations of some of Shakespeare's most famous quotes.
