Behold the flower-child,
Who kindled the fire in the camp of love,
Who tried to follow on the windy road,
And faltered ‘neath the load.
~
Are you leaving now,
Angry over something that I didn’t do?
Are you leaving,
The dust of the desert too earthy for you?
You thought I had something to offer,
From hearing the words in my song;
And suddenly now, we are stranded
Where neither of us could belong.
~
In those moments of passion,
In dimly lit warmth,
We sloughed off the weather,
And lived in the moment together.
~
You are taking the child…
Will I know of it's coming?
Will it know about me?
Will the path you take now
Really be that much better…
Without you… without me?
I did what I could to support you;
So what else could anyone do?
I gave you my all and you shunned it;
It was ‘peace and love'… and then you.
~
We brought our summer
To that winter storm…
Oh, the fervor that was you and me!
I lost myself in you, and then…
It was winter once again.
~
You are cheating yourself,
How can anyone love you the way that I do?
You knew from the start
The road would be rugged
Until we got through.
Oh, you haven’t a reason for leaving;
It is only the wind in your hair.
It has given you something I couldn’t…
A reason for going somewhere.
