Forever Down a Dirt Road
A Love and Loss Poem
Forever down a dirt road
Forever in my mind
Hands free and waving
Feet bare and hair flying
Reaching out to touch her hand
Coyly smiling and pulling it away
Childhood was less ugly with him there
I wish he had been able to stay.
Blonde and blue breezing down the road
Fishing poles and rolled up jeans
Tank tops and tackle boxes
Simple plans and simple dreams.
Forever down a dirt road
Forever in my heart
Childhood sweetness untainted by time
Because forever down a dirt road
Is only forever in my mind.
I see myself running
Gravel like sand under me
The little white house on the corner
My future to be.
It starts to move away
Like some dramatic fadeout
My small hands reach so hard
It disappears as I begin to shout.
Then the sun hits my face
From my nearby windowpane
And I realize it was all a dream
And I'll never see him again.
Forever down a dirt road
Forever in my soul
Childhood sweetness untainted by time
Because forever down a dirt road
Isn't forever anymore.
