You're So Naive
From the Rock Bottom Series of Old Poems
I don’t fall for words anymore.
If you want “I love you’s” hung from tree branches and
“Stay with me’s” adorning tabletops,
I suggest you look somewhere else.
Life is not a fairy tale,
and I am tired of being told that your Prince Charming will come
when you kiss a million frogs.
No.
Prince Charming comes when you drink poison,
and you’re left feeling nothing but numb as you lie on the bathroom floor.
Prince Charming tells you that you’re more beautiful than the sun,
but he burns holes in your skin when he touches you.
Those wounds don’t heal.
They will sting every time you try to fill them up.
I don’t believe in “I’m crazy about you’s”
If you want to win my heart,
do not waste your time staring into my eyes.
Learn the way I move and compare me to a tornado.
Listen to my voice,
and remember what thunder sounds like without any rain.
I don’t fall for words anymore.
I will not cut myself open and allow my heart to fall to your feet
just so I can wait for you to stomp on it.
I will not watch my blood pour into your hands,
because even with all the buckets that you try to save
you will never catch all of me.
I will wish you away like a waterfall,
and wreck your compassion for me
like a wildfire in the middle of a drought.
I don’t fall for words anymore.
And I will not love you until I destroy you first.
