You Deserve Better

Poetry from an aromantic asexual

[DISCLAIMER: I wrote this a few years ago, when struggling with my own sexuality and an eating disorder.]

words of affection feel clumsy in my mouth

they tumble out in a tone almost mocking

emotions dance around just beyond my reach

those caught, stay locked in

sex, I only indulge in for calories burnt

with no sense of physical attraction

romance is not lost on me

but best left for Disney animation

i fall in love with ideas and concepts

with stories, not the person

reality holds no magic for me

your flaws ruin the immersion

i’ll play along with a loving charade

forget any form of communication

mind reading would be a relevant skill

useful in your application

i substitute feelings for humour

wrongs expressed in a laugh

physical contact and pda

in all honesty feels a bit daft

if pursuing any kind of companionship

and take only one thing from this letter

allow me to issue a word of caution:

you deserve so, so much better.
