Writing Is My New Drug

This poem is about recovering from a shopping addiction and using writing as an outlet.

Writing is my new drug.

It's a place I can turn to,

When I am in need.

When I want to drown my sorrows,

And need something less destructive to focus on.

Writing is my free therapist.

It's a place open at all hours.

A place I can vent my life frustrations,

And also explore my dreams.

Writing is my new drug.

It's also my old drug.

A hobby put down,

And picked back up over the years.

The only way to improve at writing,

Is with practice.

Draft after draft.

I grow as an individual.

I craft stories in my head from demons set out to destroy me and devour my very existence.

Writing is my new drug.

It's not cigarettes.

It's not alcohol.

It's not draining my bank account for shiny objects.

It’s a positive outlet that helps drain the demons from my mind.
