Writers Hear Words
This poem is about being a writer.
Writers hear words in their head that others don’t.
It’s both a blessing and a curse.
Exhausted and getting ready to go to bed.
Suddenly the perfect sentence pops into my head.
I must get up to write it down or it will be lost forever in time and space.
I have to turn all the lights back on in my home and write out this idea.
This happens often.
It’s like a tone only dogs can hear.
It’s a language built inside my mind that few understand.
Someday the voice is loud and stern, other times it is soft and quiet.
Writers hear words from other plains,
And this is where we get our storytelling ability from.
This is where we fall in love with our characters,
And know their fate before anyone else will.
I know how the story is going to end before I even write the first lines of the first paragraph.
I write out of order, and piece together the parts like a jigsaw puzzle later on.
Only I have access to view what the picture will look like once it's complete.
No one else can see my vision.
I will struggle through sleepless nights just trying to get the right words out.
The right emotions that will make others feel a certain way about my characters.
I will daydream about what they may look like and be like had a met them at the bus stop or in a public library.
What would they wear, how would they smell?
Every small detail is important to me.
To some this is insanity.
Creating an imaginary friend or a character for my book.
To me this is normal.
I dechiper the chirps of crickets on sleepless nights.
I am inspired by the stories they share with me.
I tell the story of strangers using my own words.
Writers hear words,
And they are compelled to listen and form their own version of the story.
