Wishes

For My Father

Screams of my name at the friday night games.

With an enormous dinner afterwards.

Trips to disneyland, six flags, and seaworld.

Or simple hugs everyday.

Grey skies turned blue,

By your boundless words.

Tears wiped away by your swift encouragement.

Headaches cured by your bedtime stories.

Weekly bike rides around the neighborhood.

That would be lovely…

Kisses on my forehead when I've done something well.

And timeouts when I've misbehaved.

Talks about the one girl who broke my heart.

With a plan on changing my ways.

Rides to church, in our Sunday best.

Matching each other’s suit,

While we match our determination to please God.

Saying “Yes Lord” in sync.

And singing songs full of praises.

Wishing for two people to never have split,

But instead gave life a chance.

Wishing for honesty about your past.

Not absent excuses, that hold no weight.

Not figments of your imagination,

That you’ve conjured up while probably being high.

So you wouldn’t feel guilty 10 years down the road.

Wishing to throw the football in the park down the street.

And daily words of wisdom.

To make sure I'm still sane,

In this world full of hate and resentment.

To not hinder my growth,

But show me how to be a man.

Wishing for a plan on the future,

Instead of going with the flow.

Wishing for physical, emotional, and spiritual love.

Love that takes hold of me,

And hugs me when I'm at my darkest.

Love that takes care of me,

When I can't take care of myself.

Love that whispers in my ear,

“Everything will be alright.”

Love that brings me..

You.
