Winter’s Yearly Rule

An Icy Fight to Rule the Coldest Months...

(Found on Google Images; snowy tree and bench.)

Dewdrops frozen in place,

Icy breaths disperse,

Colder and colder,

Leaves on trees long gone,

Hark! In the still of the eve,

The silence engulfs all,

Frost seizing hold,

Tendrils creeping ‘cross the ground,

Crackling icicles,

And thin sheets of ice sing,

Bearing the weight of a cold new world,

Winter draws near with eyes wild,

A frozen heart beating fast,

Snow in generous heaps,

Drifting lazily through the day,

And late into the stark night,

Picking up the pace,

Falling faster and faster,

Racing the frost and the ice,

Snowy tundras form,

The early sun rises unto glory,

Winter has arrived,

Blanketing the landscape,

The cold embrace clutching the light,

Holding heat hostage in the sky,

Skinny beams reach,

Grasping for the glistening ground,

Sneaking into pockets of warmth,

After hours have passed,

Or days, or weeks,

The sun finally has his way,

And winter slips into slick submission,

Melting in minutes,

Months of perfect preparation,

Gone in the blink of an eye,

But for winter there is always next year.
