A Poem

He speaks to me in words and I look at him with feelings.

You start at the end. I finish in the beginning.

Before I dare expose the lyrics, my breath burns my tongue.

Yet all the songs left unspoken never fail to pierce my lungs.

Perhaps you see me, maybe you don’t.

Hiding in the shadows, it’s all I’ve ever known.

But the stars smile brighter as the darkness burns greater.

I see the moon and all its fractures within each and every crater.

Your smile holds secrets, you’ve kept from yourself.

Did you really think I wouldn’t catch you clearing the shelf?

Look at the ocean, how the waves can’t stop kissing the shore.

The sand gets lonely you know, drying up then drowning some more.

I guess I’ll never know if you count the words or

just flip through the pages.

Hearts are wild creatures

that’s why our ribs were made cages.
