Why We Hike: Part 2
Connecting the Wild Self to Wild Spaces
When we hike
We remember that nothing worthwhile in life comes without effort
Yet that effort must always be rooted in joy
The top of the mountain is always a climb
The river is always a jarring descent
The forest is always through twisting and rocky paths
We stumble
Our hearts pump
Our legs grow tired
And our motivation is questioned...
Never has the air around us felt so deeply like the life that it is
Each inhale and exhale—our salvation
Each view of the landscape around us—our rescue
And suddenly our body is in tune—it needs to be to continue
Our steps are balanced, our target strong—keep going, keep going, keep going
And we make it to the mountaintop
We find our way to the river
The hidden waterfall appears
Instantly the effort was worth it
Each drop of sweat, an offering of effort
We are gifted with the ineffable sensation of being captivated beyond compare
We are not just viewing beauty
We have become it
