Why She Doesn't Speak

A Poem About Anxiety and Bullying

She once laughed so loud,

you could hear her from

the other side of the world.

She once was so happy,

she skipped home

to her loving family.

But a storm came and,

wrecked down her candy house

that she built up with,

unicorns and fluffy rainbow clouds.

When the storm went away

she wasn't the person she was before,

she couldn't speak, she was scared.

The mockery they made of her,

changed her, she couldn't be her.

She once laughed so loud but,

now she stands there silently,

second-guessing herself.

Thank you for reading this poem. It's about a girl who grew up happy and saw the world as a beautiful place until she came across a storm (bullies) and it changed her and made her have insecurities. She became anxious about everything so much so she could never enjoy herself again. She had anxiety and everything she saw before, she couldn't see it in the same way again.

This poem I wrote is based on a true story, unfortunately. In fact, the story is still going on and has not ended and probably will not end any time soon.

The girl in the story always believed in happy endings and fairy tales, she always thought she would end up being a real-life fairy tale. Until she moved into high school and came across people who saw her as a failure and wanted to ruin her memorable smile and her precious laugh. She was never on the popular side of school but, she had always managed to find her group of friends. That is until high school when the group of friends she felt most comfy with grew apart with her and sided with the awful bullies. Her world was turned upside down. It changed the way she looked at life, she became doubtful of everyone she came across, she couldn’t even trust herself.

Because of the bullying she never spoke, she did not have the courage to, she felt everyone was out to get her and only talked to a select few, mostly her family. She couldn’t speak up for herself anymore. Now the girl doesn’t believe in happy endings or fairytale beginnings. It’s like she is in a forest and can’t find the way out the trees and there are monsters and they're surrounding her and there is no way out for her to run. One day, there will be a way out, after all, you can’t have a rainbow without rain. Scars take time to heal and so do people. One day it will be a part of her journey but for now, it will be her heartache. One day she won't even remember the peoples' names who knocked down her “candy house.”

Now, I wanted to talk about bullying because I can't write a poem about bullying and not give my personal advice on it because it affects so many people. Whatever age you are, bullying can affect you. It happens everywhere, whether that’s in school or the workplace and even in your family. There are different types of bullying including cyber bullying which happens on the web. There's mental and physical bullying. No matter how you are being bullied or how old you or even where it happens, it no less affects you. There is always someone you can talk to, for example, a teacher or a family person, or even the police. You should never retaliate by being mean back as that won’t help your case. Two wrongs don’t make a right. If you don’t have anyone you can talk to, you can always write about it in a notebook to help get your feelings out there.
