What They Don't Tell You About Icarus Loving the Sun
P.S. Don't Fly Too Close
Ninety three million miles from earth
There I stood, flames dancing
Warm, inviting, dangerous
Holding out my hand to him
His father had warned him
As a child, with his whiskey
Fueled fists
Not to be vulnerable
Not to love
His father gave him wings
Of wax and feathers
And he was charmed by the
Danger of flying
Just as he was charmed by the
Burning light of an ember
Ninety-three million miles from earth
He could soar through the air
Without a care in his mind
Without an expectation
Except
Don’t fly too close to the sun
Ninety-three million miles from earth
There I stood, flames dancing
Warm, inviting, dangerous
Holding out my hand to him
Somedays, he allowed the flames
To keep him warm
Never close enough to ignite
A feather
He enjoyed the adrenaline that
Came from almost breaking
The rules
But not quite
Denying he was vulnerable
To the way the flames kissed
Him gently each time he
Dared to fly
His father gave him wings
Of wax and feathers
And he was charmed by the
Adrenaline that rushed through
Him when he dared to fly
His father warned him not too close
Not too close
Not too vulnerable
Not to fall in love
But one day
His wings ignited in flames
And as he fell into an ocean
As blue as his eyes
I thought
It was ironic
That while he was
Terrified of flames
He had started
A raging inferno
Inside of me
One that I hope
Never dies
