What's Your Story, Anyway?

A Competitive Piece

A poem covering a relationship between two boys with extreme structural parallels in their lives. (Meant to be read top to bottom, then bottom to top)

Boy.

You, the boy born of self deprecation; the boy who revels and simmers in his loneliness and drinks grief with every spirit.

You're a story book boy, whose lost his happy ending.

Sometimes you have moments that are more than gratifying, the rest are the same lines read on repeat.

"I deserve this."

"This is my fault."

You, the boy built up high on story books, filled with thousands of pains that aren't even your own.

What's your story anyway?

I'm sure I have you figured out by now, but you still have more left unwritten.

Your story, as it goes thus far;

You dealt with hardship from birth, through abuse and adoption, and further mistreatment.

From blocking out your pain and taking everyone else's in return.

You're afraid to be read, but were the same person.

Are we not?

You and I've experienced so many pains in that of similarity.

You weren't loved for a long time, you weren't a person for a long time.

But, what's your story anyway?

You were physically and emotionally destroyed, were you not?

You were underrated in all things you tried. You weren't good enough.

You, Boy, the boy born into this world of nothing but dissatisfaction and disdain for what your eyes can process.

You, whose story cant continue on until you do.

What's your story anyway.

From what I'm reading, you're a little boy trapped in the body of someone whose been dead as of late.

You're a little boy whose afraid to accept anything other than constant neglect.

You take on so much pain, you find it hard to believe someone loves you.

Through the constant beatings. Battling depression, anxiety, panic.

Through constant regret and denial.

What's your story?

Better yet, what's our story?

My story?

That’s what this is. The story of my constant pain retold, the same lines repeated.

The story of our constant struggles with living.

The story that makes us the same, and different, a story told by millions; and just myself respectively.

We're just stories, and I'm the boy, born of fear.

That's my story.
