What If?

A Poem

What if you were already good enough,

What if you could put aside the incessant self improvement project,

That one day you will become enlightened,

That you will be better, perfected,

That you will come into wholeness,

If only you work harder,

Try harder to be a better person,

Be less judgemental,

More loving,

What if you could cast aside your guilt and see that you tried your best,

What if you could forgive yourself and move on,

Really putting the past aside,

Release yourself from the ghosts of the past that haunt you,

Your mistakes that bring you down,

That stop you from moving forwards,

That make you fear the future,

What if you could cast it all off,

And move forwards into this present moment without the baggage,

Embracing a new lightness,

Knowing that you don’t need to try any longer,

Running yourself into the ground worrying when you can just be,

Enjoying the beauty of this moment and all it brings you,

With fresh awareness,

Rather than existing in a loop inside your mind,

Projecting into a distant future,

And imagining all that could go wrong or right,

Trying to control each moment and how you feel,

Rather than just letting go and living in joy in this moment,

How would it feel to let go of the need to find your purpose,

And just know that you are alive and that is enough for now,

To experience the miracle of life,

Of awareness,

Of each breath that carries you into the next moment,

As it carries you to experiences that excite you or allow you to decide what you wish your life to be,

What interests you, captivates you,

What does your imagination wish to create,

This is what it is to be awakened,

Just to be present,

Just to be,

It is so simple,

And let all else just be.
