What Does the Universe Taste Like?

I once was asked, “what does the universe taste like?”

At the time I answered, “stars.”

However if I were to be asked again, “what does the universe taste like?”

I believe my answer would be along the lines of this...

The universe tastes bitter like iron, akin to the taste of blood. The universe tastes like broken hearts, and the agony that ensues. The universe tastes like roses, be they buds or right before they die. The universe tastes like bonfire sparks in the air, the jump you give when one touches your skin. The universe tastes like frost over trees, the universe tastes like gold. The universe tastes like the different shades of diamond in your eyes, the universe tastes like a flood. The universe tastes like stained glass windows splattered by the rain. The universe tastes like cracks in the sidewalk and the grass that grows between them.

But what I really think the universe tastes like is the memory of you. Memories so sweet I could cry from the smile in your eyes. Memories so painful I could be paralyzed and die.

The universe tastes like the stars, but mostly like the ones underneath your skin. The universe tastes like the love you gave, without ever letting mine in.
