We’re Still Here

i write this is for the prayers and the believers,

the ones with irrefutable proof that face value

isn’t nearly as genuine as six feet of depth,

the ones that see the easy route and still

decide to choose the winding road less traveled,

not as yearned but giving in lessons

embedded in the events of the book of life

this is for the dry eyes not easily wet but

aged evident by wrinkled skin

brought on by the exploration of love and understanding

even in the face of despair, eradication and erasure

i write this for yous all

my reflection of skin color

yous all,

my sister shades of fawn and burnt umber

my father shades of coffee and sienna

my brother shades of bronze and cocoa

my mother shades of chocolate and ebony

i write, i write, i write....

for even in the aftermath of extinction,

we are immortalized
