We Embody Dr. Seuss’ Description of Love

“We are all a little weird, and life’s a little weird,

and when we find someone whose weirdness is

compatible with ours, we join up with them and

fall into mutual weirdness and call it love.” —Dr. Seuss

I have been shown

through observations of another, a friend,

that I can do better (better than you),

But I don’t want to.

I don’t want to breathe, even think, without you

You make me feel

make me fly

It didn’t used to be like this, I needed no one until I needed you

She tells me I deserve better,

better hair

better wealth

better mental wellness

She thinks that’s what I need

you are not these,

in her eyes,

and that’s ok.

Why?

Because everyone can always be “better”

but no one will ever be the best at being better

None can reach perfection

only equality

And since I’m not perfect (perfect body, perfect mind), I don’t deserve better

Besides, don’t I get to decide what’s best for me?

I deserve

to laugh until I cry

to tickle and to be tickled

to dream of Florida

to sing off-key

to adventure

to scream

to sit with legs over one another’s

to eat pizza rolls

to walk through crooked trees

to swing

and to be happy

incandescently, preferably

with you.

Even when you’re not better,

and I’m not best

Even when you’re sad,

and I’m a wreck

So I could deserve better than you,

and you could deserve better too

but what I want is you

just the way you are.

When you wake, making incoherent whines,

because you’re not a morning person.

When you kiss me and tell me I’m worthy of love.

When we are throwing plates

against a concrete wall.

When you are hurting and insecure.

When we sled down a hill of ice and

fall

happily

scraping our bodies every time.

When you can’t remember the order of the months.

When we fall into mutual weirdness

and call it love.

I want you

All of you

Because who could be better

more excellent

more preferred

more suitable

for me

than you?
