Warning Signs

They don't tell you they'll break your heart, but I wish they would.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

i would hope they don’t plan on it beforehand, but maybe they do.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they waltz into your life with golden specked eyes that resemble sunsets

and a smile that shines brighter than northern lights.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they allow you to memorize their coffee orders, listen to the music they like, and make it difficult to return to places they brought you to when they wanted to be by your side.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they will steal glances at you when they stop at red lights. and when you notice, and a color more crimson than the reflection of the stop light will rise to your cheeks.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they will sit in the passenger seat of your car while it rains, country music leaking softly through the speakers. they will look at you as though they could see right through you, and maybe he can. he will also look at you as if he can see you, really see you in the way that terrifies you. the way that you can feel all the way in your toes.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they reveal their hearts to you. they tell you what makes them feel as though their bones could crack or their veins are on fire. they explain to you how their parents treated them as children, they will explain to you how they don’t understand math the same way you do, they will explain why they feel like they are so fucked up. your heart will shatter, your chest will hurt and they will wind up living somewhere in-between your ribs.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they will hold your hand, press velvet kisses to your neck, and tell their friends that it means nothing at all.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they will trail their fingers over your skin, trying to read you as if there are words embedded under the surface.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

they will look at you as though you placed each and every star in the night sky solely for them, then tell you that they think it’s too much.

nobody warns you that they are going to break your heart.

but god, i wish they would.
