Raised by an Addict

I watch the road below

Waiting for you to come home

Just a child

I didn’t know

The drugs were calling

And you had to go

The thought of my mother

Putting needles in her arms

Breaks my heart and aches my bones

Hours I’ve spent

Waiting outside hotel rooms

Hours and hours I’d spend calling you

Where have you been, why can’t I get a hold of you

I give you my cash

Still you have no gas

Left waiting again

Where have you been?

Out getting high?

Or out with a guy?

Mentally abused

Raised by an addict

Guilt tripped and left

You have to re-wire your mindset

You don’t know what normal is

An idea of what you think it might be

Is as close as you’ll get

You made me live in your depression with you

You projected your self-hatred onto me

Then refused to see

That there was anything wrong with me

Now here I am, an adult

Still I feel so lonely

I thought this would pass

No skills to cope with this sadness in me

And no one here to teach me
