Underwater
under you
it’s all the same
and I can scarcely find the breath
I need
to tell you all the things
you need
to know...
Little things, like
“I love you,”
before I go.
Just for the night.
Retreating
into separate rooms,
our strong young hearts still
beating, beating
and these temporary homes
will fill up with skeletons and
bones--
the ghosts of our past
before we go.
But here we stay until
we can find a place to call our own
where there will be
no more
retreating
if you wish to stay.
We can keep our old hearts
beating, beating
together, if you stay.
