Underground
Half-awake on an Early Morning with You

This morning,
In the still blue half-light before the sunrise
Still more asleep than awake,
You held me so tightly that I imagined myself deep underground, my bones gripped by roots, warm and safe
And I can only hope that when I die they bury me without a casket
So that one day my skeleton can rest in the embrace of roots and soil
Gripping me tightly
The way your arms did this morning.
Smile, with lips swollen from sleep and love
Shocking-blue eyes
I melt, the earth swallows me whole
