Trials and Tribulations
A Poem I Wrote for My Sister on Her Birthday, After She Beat Cervical Cancer this Past Year
The roads that we take, that lead us nowhere fast,
Open our minds to the inevitable and help us relax.
Times may be hard, because nothing good can be easy;
Take a deep breath, don't get so queasy.
Strength and determination have gotten you this far;
You beat fucking cancer,
Though I wish we could have hit it with my old ass, beat up car.
More than half the woman than I am today,
though sometimes your trials and tribulations,
make you want to run astray.
A runner myself, in the worst of disguise;
Sometimes you can see it in my happy, facetious eyes.
Our past is where it should be, and for that I am eternally grateful;
I'm sorry that I was such a bitch,
but most of all, I'm sorry that I was so hateful.
Had I known back then, what I have learned by now
I would have gladly stood there at 17, and proudly taken a deserving bow.
A bow for a woman, who continues to prevail;
A bow for a woman, who had a free one-way ticket ride to hell.
A bow for a woman, who continues to be strong;
And a bow for a woman, who really only needed herself, all along.
A bow for a woman, who inspires me to be better, and also inspires me to dream;
But most of all, a bow for a woman, whose radiance, intelligence and wisdom
always seem to flawlessly beam.
Beam from the face of a soul, whose story you would not know,
unless you open up your heart to her,
and witness the stars inside of her stunningly glow.
Glow like the stars, in the black, country night sky,
though sometimes reminding you, that it's okay to cry
Cry about the things that make you want to scream,
Cry about the terrible things that you see in your dreams;
Cry about things, that to you mean the most
and cry about the things of which you cannot control.
Then, take a long, deep breath in,
Just hold it..........
Now exhale slowly,
and let that shit go.
