Together & Gone

Once Upon a Stick and a Stone

Once Upon a Stick and a Stone

Together we watched the stars,

shimmering and shining,

glimmering for only us.

Together we watched the airplanes,

soaring across the sky,

in their own secret race,

like slow-motion rockets headed to space.

Together we watched the sun rise,

and fall,

breathing light into our world,

then bathing us in night.

Together we watched the moon soar above us,

radiating us with the hope of sleep,

of dreams,

of a new tomorrow.

Together we watched the world go by,

full of friends and laughter,

of sorrow and despair.

Together we watched one another survive,

determined to stand back up,

just as the moon and sun taught,

our own little dance,

found in our existence,

the one of our own making.

But in all that time,

you never smiled at me,

the way you smiled at them.

Tell me, darling,

Was I the reason you left?

Or was it them?

heartbreak
