Thoughts on Snow

For Winter Lovers Everywhere

Snow wipes the slate clean.

My mother used to say it fell upon you like angel kisses, each one forgiving you of something.

Its silence is deafening, like a thousand ghosts you can feel in the room but cannot see, leaving you afraid to breathe in case you miss the sight of them. You stand perfectly still, so sure that you will find something extra, something more, and you always do, even if you don't know quite what it is.

Snow is a promise of something bigger. It reminds you to be bold, to sense the magic, to see miracles, each as unique as a fingerprint.

Your feet crunch down on something not quite solid, you are weightless, walking on the water.

Snow is gentler than the rain but can burn just like the sun, its touch a blessing and a warning all at once. It does not pelt or invade, but It can blind you to your own senses. It can untrust you to your step; it can guide you into nowhere if you let it. It can frighten and smother into an eerie sleep, but it will not drown you, oh no, snow is creeping, a shadow self, capable of reflecting or enlightening all that it surrounds. It does not terrify, only invites you in, maybe to yourself.

But if you watch it, watch the feathers fall into a glitter carpet; you become part of a magnificent moment, a tremendous gift, a solitary sacred subtle shift. You cannot 'unwitness' snow. Like some kind of magic, you are forever changed.

This is nature’s gift to you, the evolution to stand on two feet. Your unique ability to look up and witness the heavens, to know there is more, to feel my mothers’ angels kissing your cheeks.

This feeling is greater than all I know,

The power within the falling snow.
