There Are Children Who Cry
Born Innocent but They Are Taken from Here Just Because of All the Things They Hear
In the darkness of the night
a man and woman; they have a fight
A child awakes and only cries
and as dawn breaks; somebody dies
A mama sits by the grave alone
shedding her tears out in the cold
Looking back at her last chance
she sits stone-cold in her circumstance
There are children who cry
for too many reasons why
born innocent, they are taken from here
just because of all the things they hear
A young mother; just the age of fifteen
knows no other way than what she has seen
Treading through her shattered life
she tries so hard to make a good wife
She's flown across the room in the air
she don't know why nobody cares
She stays with him just because
she feels alone and oh so lost
She keeps staying so very strong
never knowing what she did wrong
Though she does the best that she can
trying so hard to please this man
There are children who cry
for too many reasons why
born innocent, they are taken from here
just because of all the things they hear
He comes in late from work one night
came from the bar and ready to fight
She wonders why when she stays so quiet
why is it she can't do anything right?
He raises his hand to their newborn child
and he looks at her; his face gone wild
She stands between the two she has loved
takes all the blows and hears her angels above
She lies there so lifeless and still
what just happened; it can't be real
Under her arm, the baby's so near
How could he harm the ones he'd loved so dear
There are children who cry
for too many reasons why
born innocent, they are taken from here
all because of just the things they hear
Three days later as all the cars roll by
two more gone, like a thief in the night
We turn our heads, never asking why
when all along, we know it's not right
Everywhere there are children who cry
but the clock keeps ticking, oh so slowly by
new babies are born to a torn down home
and mama's are crying all alone
There are children who cry
for too many reasons why
born innocent, they are taken from here
all because of what they will hear
born innocent, they are taken from here
just because of what they will hear

This was written as a poem and later made into a song.
The enormous amount of self-love and discipline it takes for a woman to walk away is horrendous courage. This is in honor of the ones who have succeeded at getting out and in honor of the ones who die trying.
