I work hard every day to keep my head afloat,
My head comes above the water line and for a moment I see the sky, the birds, the sun shining and I can see all the beautiful colours in the sky,
The array of vibrant colours light up my eyes and run through my soul,
I feel warm and safe,
Above the waves I can see the world and all its glory,
I can see every detail of wondrous beauty and gives it me the strength to stay afloat,
The clean fresh air fills my lungs and I feel like I can do anything and be anyone,
I feel free.
Then…I begin to sink into the waves
I fall deeper and deeper into the water,
The motions of the water take me further and further into their arms,
The water flows through my fingers, through toes…
Their strength takes over me and my energy cannot fight back,
The sharpness of the water leaves scars on me,
My wounds begin to bleed,
The dark water below draws me in closer,
I feel the coldness of that murky and silent hole,
As I drift into the hole, my eyes open and I look to the surface,
I can see the sun shining through the water,
I can see glimpses of the wings of the soaring birds,
I fuel my fire again,
I feel the burn to climb to the surface,
Ignite my spirit to swim onwards and upwards,
I ask my arms to move, I plead with my legs to kick,
I have to do this,
The match strikes and I use all my energy to get to the top,
Each wave is different and each time I use them to help me to the clouds,
The battle has scared me but the war has rebuilt me…
