The Sitting Tree

A Poem About Motion #VocalNPM

Ever look at a tree that is completely still? No blossom or bud stirring.

It’s magic, really. Able to completely sit still, completely still.

And there I was, awake before everyone, and standing outside, sliding door closed behind me.

It’s beautiful to be awake before everyone else, before the wind, and the people.

Before the cars, and the planes. Before the computers, and the devices.

My eyes tightened, looking for a fault in this stationary moment.

Mind prone to motion, pings on the phone, smiles to strangers, horns, and radios

Everywhere and all the time. A world in motion, always.

But not that morning. Not for me. And not for that tree.

Nothing but the sun, and the blossoms and buds, still not stirring.

And it’s these moments of stillness that I feel the most moved.

When suddenly a leaf shudders. Good morning.
