The Shelter

From Addiction

Unionville, N.C.

I can hear its footsteps

thunderous voices

at my front door again

through the window panes

fiercely approaching

Consuming the atmosphere

Consuming the atmosphere

Overwhelming presence

blocking out all other senses

thoughts, feelings

sane reasoning

judgments and emotions

It always brings with it

always brings with it

visions and voices

compelling me

venture out beyond the shelter

away from safety

away from sanity

Thinking with blurred vision

unable to see the past

Thinking with blurred vision

unable to see the past

Thinking with blurred vision

unable to see the past

It will be different this time

not entangled

in its nightmare

that dark web

stuck in limbo again

unable to move or speak

Lost in a storm

no sense of direction

waiting, hoping, praying

let it pass, let it pass, let it pass

Where is shelter? Where is shelter? Where is shelter?

Where is safety?

Where is comfort?

I need refuge…

under the shelter

under the shelter once again

I will do whatever it takes

whatever it takes, whatever it takes, whatever it takes

Under the shelter

under the shelter once again

Whatever it takes…

(Long, deep sigh of relief)
