The Serpent

Dedicated to My Friend Who Once Encountered a Serpent

It was a rose once

fragrant, perfect, untouched

its aroma enticed

its beauty unparalleled

blooming amidst praise and adoration

Then the serpent approached

cast its devious eyes upon the rose

and smiled with sinister intent

Its slithery body circled the rose

slowly, effortlessly

he climbed and climbed

until he was nestled

within its center

Patiently he waited and watched

looking for an opportunity

at the opportune time

He struck!

The once perfect rose began to wither

to lose its fragrance

it was no longer perfect

no longer untouched

Its petals began to blacken

they fell soundlessly on the earth

the serpent smiled

as he unwound his body

But as he looked around

his eyes beheld evidence of beauty

springing from every corner

his face twisted into a grimace

and set about to execute his plan again.
