The Picture

She looked at the picture and studied it carefully

She remembered the pain from that day

The day that he had abused her physically

The day that he went too far

She often made excuses for him

But after he demanded they take a loving picture together

He got very angry, said she wasn't trying

So he showed her a rage she had not seen before

She saw him coming at her, but was frozen in fear

She was afraid of what was about to happen

She had nowhere to run

So before she knew it, his fists were pounding at her back

Then he was kicking her in the stomach

Screaming at her, asking why she didn't show love in the picture

She thought to herself, well I wonder why

Too many years of abuse, too many tears shed

But this day was the worst, this day was the day she broke free

For that day is when he literally kicked a new life out of her growing stomach

It was that day, the day she had to go to the hospital with yet another lie

The day they took her lifeless baby from her

The day she had to be cleaned out and given pills for the pain

That was the day she had enough

That was the day she took a nice nurse aside and told her everything

That was the day she was taken to another part of the hospital

Out of harm's way, as they called the police

That was the day she finally got her freedom

She has never looked back since

Even forgot she still had the picture

So she took the picture and threw it in the trash

She no longer needed to be reminded of that day

She had a good life now, a life where she was strong

Where she stood up for herself and became very determined

She was much better without that kind of man in her life.
