He told her he would paint her,
And paint her, that he did
And although he’s since left her,
She has it tattooed on her skin
Her body: a deep blue,
The color of his eyes
For their love he said
Which “rivaled the ocean’s depth”
And the vastness of the sky
Her eyes were a bright yellow,
The joy that shines within
For she would call him “My Sunshine”
And she wished to become his
Her lips were a candy red
Glossy and tempting to the eye
They tasted sweet as sugar
The cherry on the pie
And her hair he painted purple
The royal resting place of her crown
“My Queen” he’d whisper in her ear
And paraded her through town
But he forgot to paint what happens
when oceans run dry
Or the fact that there are cloudy days
When one can’t see the sky
He couldn’t seem to capture
The movement of sunlight
Or where it seems to go
For it doesn’t shine at night
He failed to save a spot
For her “luscious saccharine” lips
And didn’t realize sugar is bitter
When burnt to a crisp
Lastly he forgot to mention
Her miserable cries and moans
When she saw she wasn't royalty
Didn’t have a crown to hold
He ran off with her heart
Not once giving her his own
For she was in a cage
That he would call her throne.
