The Old Steam Engine

A Life Once Lived

The old steam engine has gone nowMy childhood dreams with itThe freedom of the easy ride, the running wild, screaming with laughter and joyNow those screams have turned silent, the joy has run tooCrowded out by pain, squashed by too many failed dreamsBroken promises, losses too painful to bearThe grass where it stood is still greenThe park where it stood is unchangedThe memories still linger in the air but the air has turned sharpWhere is the carefree girl, no thought for tomorrowJust joy for today, and life lived so fullHow did the light turn so darkHow was that freedom bound by chainsOnly one real light remains, gained by painful timeLessons learned and scars burned deepBut that light burns bright and beckons me homeWhere pain won't exist, and fear is silencedAnd the girl that played on the old steam engineWill return again, her spirit wild, her love unchainedAnd freedom will be hers once more
