The Normality of It All

Hatred exists in us all.

Hatred, in its truest form,

is putrid, nauseating, detestable;

normal.

It cares not for feelings

or livelihood.

It exists in

a baseball cap

and basketball shorts.

It exists in burning cigarettes

and open prejudice;

I can’t say I’m proud.

But then again,

I can’t say anything;

not to my own family.

It is snide remarks

and laughed off phrases.

It’s brutality

and maybe even

Presidential Elections.

It’s not just a joke;

it never was.

And

you may not know,

but it exists within us all,

waiting patiently,

waiting angrily.

It exists in me too;

in my silence,

in my laughing.

My eyes are turned,

with a half, uncomfortable smile

that quivers,

but never slips.

It’s anywhere and everywhere,

causing wars, causing fear.

It started with the first empire

and history will repeat itself

for all time.

But this is nothing new

because as hatred exists

as our cruel maker,

saying, “those foolish, destructive humans”,

the world keeps spinning on.

And the people?

They walk on too.

As the world keeps moving on,

so too will the hatred.
