The Monster That Is Addiction
A Poem About My Personal Struggle With Addiction
Addiction is a thief, it steals everything that
makes you up as a person, your joy, your smile,
your hope and most importantly your voice
When it comes to offering a solution to the chaos
around you
It is a welcome distraction, you let it call the shots
until it starts to demand more, more time, more money
It has begun to envelop you, until one day you see
rock bottom, others fighting for their lives
You then realize you want to fight this with everything
you have
The hope returns piece by piece, the joy comes through
showing you that you deserve to have a full life with hopes
and dreams for the future
Your voice returns, shaky and unsure at the beginning, but
over time it emerges stronger than ever
Showing you that one step at a time is how healing is
supposed to be
True strength comes from knowing that you are not alone
in the roller coaster ride that is recovery
