The Mask of Fragility

What We Cannot See

There she is, standing in the corner. A girl with a broken smile facing odds against her own world. When you walk up to her with a lovely heart and you ask her how she is, she'll tell you she's just fine. That life is going by. She'll tell you she's keeping busy and lots to do. And in all that time you accept her answer and walk away proud.

But what she doesn't tell you are the lies she tries to seal behind a mask of fake notions and going with the flow as they say. Time will continue even when and if she doesn't. Time does not care nor appreciate her absence or presence. It's a mere speck of what we create to keep moving forward. She becomes her fears and lives in the shadows of the night and day. She conceals well behind her blank expressions and puffy eyes from crying, you'll never guess the real person she desires to be. So she hides her physical scars so people don't judge her. At night wide awake she takes the knife and cuts across reminding her of who she's not. The pain is at least more bearable than what she can't fix. Those fears tell her she isn't worth it, they tell her she isn't lovable, and better off, so she believes it. Each passing day becomes a closer call to ending it all. She can't explain why nor can she understand, the lady behind the mask is something she never dreamed of becoming. Slowly but surely she dies inside, a little more of her gone from your lives. If she gains her wings then you'll know why, a girl with a broken smile facing odds against her own world.
