The Mansion in My Dream

A Portal of Yearnings

The Mansion in My Dream

I once had a dream influenced by longing,

Where I entered a mansion of a nature unknown.

And a tree grew within, with a trunk thick and looming,

With the branches hid in the rooms where they’d grown.

And the roots reached below, unseen in the darkness,

Where soft noises beckoned from sources not shown.

The stairs were a spiral I climbed with abandon,

With a haunting frustration and a mounting despair,

For they always returned to the place where I’d started,

Where a window above me did solemnly stare

At sky that was either overcast or nocturnal;

And the doors I could find never led anywhere.

I hungered and thirsted but not of the body,

But more of the vessel constituting my mind,

For I knew not from where I had come or was going

Nor the nature of matter I had hoped here to find.

I explored all about for the clues that would tell me,

And I mockingly suffered the lot of the blind.

The tree sighed and shifted, unpleased with my presence,

As if I had invaded its personal space.

And to bid me be gone, so uncaring and stolid,

It rattled the walls and the halls without grace.

Down below in the cellar, obscure and abysmal,

Some lonely thing whispered with a promised embrace.

I know not how long I maundered that labyrinth,

Caught up in the billow of the vague and the deep,

At bay in the creases of the conscience in slumber

That delays in the milieu of the shadows that creep.

The window above that enticed my attention

Was a portal of yearnings, construed in my sleep.
