The Journey

This is about being a goth in the 90s.

The journey from goth to hippie.

The transformation from one stereotype to that of another.

I don't like labels but they must be used as ways to describe different styles and types of people.

I used to wear all black with hints of gray and red mixed in from time to time.

Thick drawn black eyeliner was my friend.

Along with black lipstick and black nail polish.

Robert Smith was my god.

I memorized the words to each song on all The Cure albums that I owned.

Trent Reznor was the voice in my dreams comforting me through high school breakups.

I was a 90s goth and my outward appearance was frowned down upon.

I was not cool.

Nor was I trendy.

Strangers asked me if it was Halloween and screamed "Freak" or "Vampire" at me on city streets through their half rolled down car windows.

I was an outcast who made easy friends with other scene kids.

Other outcasts understood the boring people of society that tried to bully us because we stood out and were not the norm.

I wasn't out to impress anyone.

I was exploring my own self expression and style.

Dancing to the beat of my own drum.

I drank my own koolaid and formed my own opinions.

I was the black butterfly who one day discovered navy blue.

Who one day opened her eyes to all the colors in the world.

My style evolved over the years.

This has been my journey.

I bleed colors of purple and green now.

Mixed with gray and black with the occasional splash of blood red but noone screams "Vampire" at me anymore.

I don't breathe pure darkness.

I am more balanced and seek light.

No more clove cigarettes.

I quit smoking but will always write darker style stories and poetry.

Somethings chance.

While other preferences stay the same.

I found the rainbow at the end of the dark tunnel.

The last bird alive through this journey.

I learned to appreciate nature and sunshine.

I learned to love the beach.
