The Green-Eyed Monster
This poem is about lust and also rejection. It’s about having a thing for someone who is normal when you have a punk rock style. It’s about said person rejecting you because of your outward appearance but also being attracted to you but not wanting to tell his friends. This poem was written in 2001.
He wasn’t really a monster,
Just someone who held my heart in the palm of his hand.
Green eyes that sucked me in like a bathtub drain and spit me out confused.
He has someone else now.
A girl more up to his standards that dots her I’s.
I always put X’s over them instead of dots.
I was not basic enough for him.
I was too outside of the box.
Outside of his comfort zone.
Not proper enough for his family.
I have someone else now too.
I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.
I found someone that does not condemn me for drinking.
Someone who is not embarrassed by my pale pink hair.
Someone, I can be myself around.
I can’t return to this cave again.
The cave I was about to give up all my trust in.
I knew he would break my heart into a million shards.
Glass would be everywhere and I would walk on it barefoot like the Anne Lennox song from the 90s.
We connected like magnets.
The green-eyed monster I almost gave my heart to.
We were both sucked in by appearance.
He had charisma like no one else.
He had a contagious smile that opened doors for him.
Into worlds, I would never be able to travel.
He had something special that I was attracted to.
But he was someone I could never have.
I was too much of a thinker and also an outcast.
His tastes were boring and basic and mine were not.
I wanted to be normal and fit into this world around me with handsome green-eyed men who could open any door with a simple smile.
Men who could make the most unlikely women fall for them without even trying.
