The Ghosts of Yesterday
This poem is about holding onto old letters and reading them years later.
I hide from the ghosts of yesterday.
I keep the memories of happy times in a box.
Old letters I really should burn.
Events I never want to relive.
But they are still alive,
And come to haunt me.
Ghosts will drown you with their sorrows.
It was all doomed.
Nothing was meant to last.
I dust the dead wings off my shoulders.
I see in black and white.
I know how it feels to love someone with all of your heart, And not have them love you back.
I know what it's like to dream of the perfect white picket fence with the perfect family.
Maybe all I wanted was acceptance.
Maybe all I wanted was a place to call my own.
I was made to believe I was sick,
When I wasn't.
I know the flip side of the coin.
To have someone put you on a pedestal,
And compliment your every move.
But this is still not love.
If you don’t feel the same way about them.
At least it's an ego boost and I felt wanted.
Inside my mind, I could hear it coming.
The calm before the storm.
The cool breeze moving in.
Before the thunder and lightning,
Before the electric went out.
And we were left in the dark
With only one candle to share between us.
Ghosts will come to haunt you.
They will point out all your wrong moves,
But they will also let you know you wouldn't be the person you are today without those mistakes.
Closing one door opens another.
Some doors I couldn't close fast enough.
Against my prior judgments.
New doors mean new light,
New light means growth.
Don't let the ghosts of yesterday haunt you.
