The Gender Binary

Queer Poem

Don’t look behind you--

There’s something lurking in the shadows,

An invisible force that no one can escape.

Don’t look behind you--

You don’t want to meet its controlling eyes.

Don’t look behind you--

There’s something you can’t run away from,

No matter how hard you try.

Don’t look behind you--

You don’t want to show it you’re on the outside.

Don’t look behind you--

There’s something waiting to regulate the way you think, act, dress, talk;

To take away your freedom of expression.

Don’t look behind you--

You don’t want to be brainwashed, and forced into an identity that isn’t your own.

Don’t look behind you--

Behind you stands the most horrific monster of all,

One that sleeps under every bed, and hides in every closet.

Don’t look behind you--

If you want to ever be able to be yourself.
