The First...

A Poem

I remember the very first time you opened your eyes.

The connection within your stare.

As I promised to look after you forever.

And held you so very near.

The first night sleeping home in our cottage...

I layed awake all night watching you breathe.

For I couldn't rest, I just watched your tiny chest

For the fear that you would leave.

First time you spoke your words...

Who would have thought Da Da could mean so much.

But I felt more in that than I'd felt before...

Within any feeling or woman's touch.

Your first steps you took with me.

I saw you get up everytime you fell down.

With a strength inside, that still fills me with pride.

There was more magic to be found.

I remember teaching you how to swim...

The first time I let you go.

The look in your face when you thought you would drown...

Then how happy you were on your own.

First time you rode your bike...

We were over the park for the longest time.

The most frustrated you had ever been.

But we got there and you were fine.

Your first day at nursery, seeing your face at the window.

I had never felt so sick as I had to go.

Your first rollercoaster, I will never forget your face.

As we raced up and down with excitement...

Your wide happy eyes brightened the whole place.

First time I rushed you to hospital.

Worst time that could be felt.

As if a heart of fire was taken higher...

Then sunk into ice only to melt.

First injection I had to give you.

You were so much braver than I.

You just smiled and kept talking.

As my hand shook with tears in my eyes.

First time I truly felt happy.

First time you entered my life.

Now I relive the magic again and again.

Every day and every night.

As if the first.
