The Caged Bird

For Mum

I ask you if you’re alright…

You tell me that you're fine.

But I know you too well…

I know you’re feeding me a line.

I can see you’re tired and fed up.

With all that’s forced on you.

And it’s so damn frustrating…

Watching what they do to you.

I can’t list the ways I love you.

I can’t explain how much I care…

You know my precious lady…

For you I’ll always be right there.

But I can’t stay here and watch it no more.

So this free bird must say goodbye.

For we all have wings now mama…

But some of us never fly.

Although your wings are clipped right now.

Don’t you know they don’t have to be.

All you have to do Caged Bird…

Is spread your wings and be free.

There’s a whole world waiting for you.

You could make it all your own.

But Mama you have to fly yourself…

You can never be shown.

Behind your tired eyes I see.

A little girl who longs to be free.

Behind invisible bars she is kept…

On my shoulder she’s often wept.

As another line shows on your face.

Another reason why you're trapped in that place.

The Vultures keep picking and wear you down.

Such a beautiful bird is kept on the ground.

Although your wings are clipped right now.

Don’t you know they don’t have to be.

All you have to do Caged Bird…

Is spread your wings and be free.

There’s a whole world waiting for you.

You could make it all your own.

But Mama you have to fly yourself…

You can never be shown.

I know you want so many things.

You deserve so much more.

It’s all out there waiting.

But you’re the wrong side of the door.

So throw away the years of hurt…

The memories ain't what they were.

Take a breath and start a new…

The worlds so empty without you.

Although your wings are clipped right now.

Don’t you know they don’t have to be.

All you have to do Caged Bird…

Is spread your wings and be free.

There’s a whole world waiting for you.

You could make it all your own.

But Mama you have to fly yourself…

You can never be shown.
