Stay Awhile

A Poem for the Voice

You looked at me with those pretty hazel eyes that make me melt inside, and your pink lips curled into a smile while you whispered: "Stay awhile?"

In that moment, I knew that you would pull yet another clichéd love poem out of my black and blue heart, bruised and beaten by life but you,

With your pretty hazel eyes kiss red back into my soul

My blushing cheeks and my brown eyes smile back while I stop in my footsteps from rushing away.

With your pretty hazel eyes, you make me feel in an instant that maybe you built the moon for me in your basement out of masking tape and tin foil

You foil my anxiety's plots with your thoughts and your pretty hazel eyes. And cotton candy smiles.

So when you stopped to fill your water bottle and I rushed away to sit down and you turned to me and whispered: "Stay awhile?" My heart screamed, "Always and forever."

Here,

Let's make a toast.

Cheers.

To forever,

To the late night calls while we nurse cups of cold tea in our hands, our cheeks hurting from laughing to the four hours of napping in your arms in the cool basement of your house where I still look for the tools you used to craft the love you still give me everyday hot and fresh...

With your pretty hazel eyes and your sweet words I wear your, "I love you's" around me like a blanket of safe. Keeping me warm from the rest of the world that tries to crumple my tongue up like discarded pieces of loose leaf.

You pull my tongue out of the trash and onto the page where it falls apart like spilled ink pots.

And when I've soaked the page you bring me new ones. Filled with small encouragements and words of hope

With your pretty hazel eyes, you ask me "Stay awhile?"

And my eyes whisper back, "Always."
