Status Quo

Poem of a Dysfunctional Society

In a world ruled by gilded beauty and false idols.

When all that defines you is who you know and your choice of clothes.

In a time of being so divided, people scream across the roads to one another about the choice of life and death. Is it a right, or is it murder? Both sides nothing but deaf ears. Getting nowhere fast.

“She was drunk. what did she expect?” “He was drunk, he meant no harm.” “She was dancing like a slut.” “She was being a tease.” “She was basically asking for it.” “He was just having fun.”

“You should have seen what she was wearing.” “He’s just a boy. He didn’t know any better.” “She’s a girl. She should have known better.”

“She liked it. She’s a liar.”

“She just wants attention.”

The girl down the street cries in her room every night and won’t say a word.

She wears layers upon layers of clothing because one wasn’t enough.

Her father hurts that he can’t hold or kiss his only daughter because she won’t let anyone that close.

Her mother cries because she doesn’t know why her daughter now lives in the shower not knowing it’s because she tries to wash him off.

How can we raise our daughters and sons to be men and women when we televise and listen to music about the Sexualization of woman and the thrills of fornication; and then wonder why Emma from third grade ended up pregnant at 14 and her 17-year-old boyfriend has three older women with more on the way?

We then idolize sex symbols around us and hang up pictures of them on our walls as if worshipping these false gods and then wonder why our daughters are always getting sick after meals, that is if they even choose to eat that day.

Boys and girls becoming homeless, for the simple fact of who they chose to kiss.

Being bashed and called sick perverts. Being treated almost worse than the man next door who was touching kids, when all he did was touch the man he loved.

She was always a him, He was always a she; and now they are both dead and beaten bloody on the streets for being comfortable in their own skin and being who they were meant to be that’s if they haven’t already put the gun to their head or blade to their wrist because the world just sees them as freaks instead of human beings. It is what it is.

All this hate and all this violence.

It’s done nothing but divide us. It’s not okay, but we’ll stay the same just to live up to the Status Quo
