Speaking the First Word

Writerhood

it is actually quite embarrassing

to take the words beating in my mind

and circulating in my heart

and put them up so that they can

live on the floor right above

my real name there

is no denying that I’ve had

so many of these private thoughts

once I’ve put them out for the world

to swallow and slowly ingest

there is no more pretending

that my words aren’t mine

when my name moves in on the first floor

and listens to the words’ ceaseless footsteps

morning and night, back and forth, pounding down

hauling mental furniture all around
